TBI blog Oct 2016 The Quantock...a wild but tasty place

Following more than 70 years' experience collectively in the catering and hospitality industry, our owners, husband and wife team Candida Leaver and Peter Starling, purchased The Bower Inn in 2010.

The pair set about revitalising the business and have created an award-winning vibrant pub, restaurant and boutique hotel.

Peter says: "This area of Somerset, the Quantocks, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is often overlooked as a holiday destination, but it's a great place to visit and somewhere off the beaten track to explore. It's still got some really wild and remote spots too, and the views are amazing.

"If you enjoy rambling, bird watching or have dogs, then there are plenty of great walks here, such as the one up to the Seven Sisters, which has a stunning view. It's also an area steeped in history.

"The Seven Sisters is a collection of trees on Cothelstone Hill and from here you can see for miles. You can enjoy a 360 view, taking in the Blackdown and Brendon Hills, the West Somerset Coast, the Bristol Channel and across to Wales and the Mendip Hills.

"The Quantocks are often bypassed by many visitors heading for destinations further along the M5.

"We get lots of guests who use us as a lunch stop off point, as we're close to the motorway and are much more appealing than the services, and they are very surprised when we explain and they see what the area has to offer."

Our award-winning fare includes dishes made from as much locally-sourced produce as possible and we even have our own bees that provide honey for guests to spread on their breakfast toast.

"We get our eggs from the farm next door and we make our own vegetarian sausages on-site, or source superb pork ones from a local butcher, who gets his meat from local farmers.

"Our bread comes from a little, local bakery in Bridgwater, which employs traditional baking methods to create its products including using old brick ovens.

"We also make our own granola, peanut butter and fresh fruit salad. We serve speciality teas from the region and locally roasted and blended coffee from Clifton Coffee too."
